it's been a year

i should play more sandbox games

maybe i should try to play more sandbox games, but they are so intimidating to me.

there is way too much freedom - you are given all the tools you want and you can do whatever you want for the rest of your time. many people seem to delight in it and get incredibly creative ideas, somehow, and even have the patience for hours and hours of working on their projects. i prefer to have clear goals i can work towards, prefer being told what to do and have instructions to follow. otherwise i feel like i am just lost entirely as to what to do. i don't even really get any ideas, much less so ambitious ones. and my adhd certainly doesn't seem to have enough patience to work on something for that long without getting painfully bored.

that being said, i've owned MakeRoom for a while and never managed to get to playing it until yesterday. it looks less intimidating, because the previews for it make it look very small and approachable, and deceptively simple. to my relief, they also have a section with 30 different objectives you can start out with! that involve decorating, or now even unpacking and cleaning up missions. i've done a little bit of all of them, and they are definitely lots of fun!

but my hand is also itching to try the mode of just decorating by yourself from scratch. they are there to save me, again - the game has a daily prompt you can use for inspiration! really nice and helpful to have some sort of idea to work towards. boy, am i bad at it, though. i know it from being bad at furnishing in the sims - i adore the process, and like what i end up with, but it still looks, well, bad. other people seem so good at this sort of thing, i look at their stuff and feel mesmerised. both in the sims 4 and in make room. people are so skilled! i have no idea how they do it, but the results are gorgeous, and look so lovely and lived in and full.

here is my first ever attempt at a daily prompt in make room, without any user-made items for the time being - the items in the game already overwhelm me, so i should probably really familiarise myself with those first. (you get my own screenshot from the game, because i for the life of me can't figure out where the game saves them to. it saves them, but where? i sure can't seem to find the path it shows in-game. it is what it is.)

i personally like it, and had fun making it. which probably is much more important than being good at it. but it sounds so much more fun to also be good at something when you do it! all i can hope for is that maybe i might get better if i will play it more. or maybe i'll keep making cringe little rooms forever. who knows!

it also made me remember yet again that i also own Tiny Glade - another sandbox game, but in that one you build instead. that intimidates me much more, as i'm absolutely no builder - i'm more of a furnishing person. i do really want to try it as well though, when i can. but i've seen (yet again) what people make in it, and can't help but feel impressed - i don't know if i'll ever be able to make anything of the sort myself.

i really wish i had more patience and inspiration - i heard plenty how these sorts of games make for helpful background references you can then use for drawing, so, you know. would be nice to figure these things out. i also realised i have a fair share of similar games on my wishlist, even though they, as i mentioned, intimidate me. but they just seem like so much fun!
